    Role:

     

    Responsible for the overall operations and direction of the accounting department; this includes direct responsibility for the credit union’s regulatory and financial reporting process along with recording financial information in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States.  Responsible for evaluating associate performance, for fostering professional development and for ensuring department associates have access to appropriate resources enabling them to perform their expected duties and responsibilities in order to ensure department success. 

     

    Major Duties and Responsibilities:

            

    35%

    Leads, supervises, and manages the daily operations of the Accounting Department; including daily general ledger management, accounts payable, fixed assets, and account reconciliation.

     

    10%

    Ensures the accurate and  timely preparation of monthly financial statements, annual financial reports and other necessary reports and requests for information; Ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting and adherence to GAAP and other regulatory requirements.

     

    10%

    Hires, trains, directs, motivates, and evaluates employee performance within the department. Recommends promotions, transfers, and salary adjustments. Coordinates and distributes work between individuals based on ability and experience. Provides training and coaching.

    Reviews the General Ledger accounts on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy of financial records, including reconciliations and clearing of outstanding items in a timely manner.

    Monitors cost control activities and improves and implements cost control strategies on an as needed basis.

    Develops and maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures and implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.

     

    5%

    Complies with applicable laws and regulations pertaining to the credit union industry, following generally accepted accounting principles. Stays abreast of regulatory changes and shares information as appropriate.

    Works with and coordinates auditors and examiners on year-end and comprehensive audits to ensure the Credit Union is in compliance with GAAP, government regulations and corporate policies and procedures.

    As a member of the Management Team, assists in the formulation and execution of Credit Union policies, objectives, and programs.

    Other duties as assigned.

     

     

     

    Expectations:

     

    1.

    To ensure the department meets all deadlines with respect to settlement activities, with minimal errors and no errors that result in losses to the Credit Union.

     

    2.

    To ensure that the Credit Union’s books, and general ledger accounts are always in balance and current.

     

    3.

    To maintain a highly qualified staff, enough to meet daily accounting demands.

     

    4.

    To keep management informed regarding key operating issues affecting the department.

     

    5.

    To provide friendly, professional and accurate service and support to all members and associates.

     

    6.

    To complete performance reviews within the prescribed time frame.

    Knowledge and Skills:

     

    Experience:

    • 5 – 10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably for a financial institution.
    • 3 – 5 years of supervisory experience.

     

     

    Education:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
    • Extensive Knowledge of GAAP.

     

    Interpersonal Skills: 

    A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact.  Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or is usually of a personal or sensitive nature.  Work may involve motivating or influencing others.     Outside contacts become important in fostering sound relationships with auditors, suppliers and members.

     

    Other Skills:

    • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills with advanced level of Excel Knowledge
    • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities across all levels of an organization
    • Strong leadership skills with a dedication to driving and achieving results. 
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

     

                                                

    Physical Demands:

    This position frequently requires you to use your fingers and to hear.

     

    Occasionally, this position requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, lifting, and talking.

     

    This position may require you to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and /or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

     

    The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activates.
