SWIC HONORS MARTIN LUTHER KING
America’s greatest civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., will be honored at a special observance event Jan. 28 at the Southwestern Illinois College Belleville Campus Main Complex Theatre, 2500 Carlyle Ave.
The program starts at 11 a.m. and continues to 12:15 p.m. Attendance is free and open to the public.
Highlights from the program will stimulate the mind and offer reverence for the life and the work of the late King, said Donna Moody, director of the Minority Transfer and Multicultural Student Services Center.
A keynote speech by Belleville Chief of Police Col. William G. Clay III will honor King’s work. Clay also will speak about his career milestones as the first African- American to serve on the Belleville Police Department as a patrol officer and as chief of police.
An interactive reading of one of King’s most famous speeches, “I Have a Dream,” will provide one of the most powerful moments of the event, Moody said. A narrator will perform King’s speech word-for-word. At certain moments, audience members will join in to recite portions from the text.
Activities continue with a performance of “The Truth by Ms. Minnie May Ruth Jenkins,” acted out by Dagne Moore-Joy of New Life in Christ Interdenominational Church of Lebanon. This short monologue is tribute to King and his wife, Coretta Scott King.
Immediately following the event a student, light refreshments will be served in the Theatre Lobby.
For more information, contact Donna Moody at 866-942-SWIC (7942), ext. 5360/5537.
